Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory and infectious process, which affects the tissues that are involved in supporting dental implants. The dental implant is osseointegrated (union of the bone with the dental implant).
In initial stages, inflammation occurs without compromising the bone. This process is called peri-implant mucositis. When the disease progresses it takes the name of peri-implantitis.
