Pediatric Facial Swelling - A Guide to Radiologic Diagnosis


Facial swelling is a common clinical problem in the pediatric population. The origins of facial swelling can vary from congenital to acquired conditions such as infection / inflammatory, benign or malignant conditions involving the soft tissue and/or bone.

Clinical history and physical manifestations are the most important factors in the evaluation of facial swelling and deciding whether imaging is indicated.


Recent advances in imaging have led to the increasing use of CT and MRI for evaluation of the underlying causes of facial swelling and the extent of disease, leading to more effective treatment.
